October 1999
Cannonball Records unearths another gem in 69-year-old Chicago singer Little Al Thomas, making his recording debut with a real good CD. It's highlighted in our Surprise section. Memphis banjo player Gus Cannon came out of retirement in 1963 to record an album of vintage jug band music for Stax Records. Very few copies of this album were originally pressed, which makes this even more of a valuable reissue for this month's Flashback section. This month's What's New section features reviews of new CDs from Sam Taylor, Mojo Buford, Big Al Dupree, Jimmy Burns, and others, as well as reissues from Texans U.P. Wilson and Long John Hunter.
