A Decade in the Desert is a new CD produced by the Phoenix Blues Society in commemoration of the Society's 10th anniversary this year. Featured are favorite acts from the annual Blues Blast festival, and includes 14 tracks from both international and local acts. Since a majority of our Blues Bytes reviewers are affiliated with the Phoenix Blues Society, it wouldn't be appropriate for us to give a critical review of the CD. Instead, I'll give a listing of the artists and cuts on the CD. But trust us, it's a great CD. We're proud of how well the selections from our local Arizona bands hold up in comparison to the better-known recording artists. The highlight of this CD is the closing cut, "Too Late," by the late Charles Brown. He still ranks as my personal favorite of all acts who have appeared at Blues Blast. Harmonica fans will not want to miss the previously-unreleased "Bullit Bill's Blues Blast," a great instrumental by Phoenix harp wizard Bill Tarsha (of the Rocket 88s). And you just can't beat the raw electric Delta blues of Big Jack Johnson, with the title cut of his wonderful Oil Man CD, originally released on Earwig Records. --- Bill Mitchell A Decade in the Desert Bill Tarsha - Bullit Bill's Blues
